Tea is more than just a drink; it is an experience, a story woven into the landscapes, cultures, and traditions of the places it is grown and consumed. At The Leaf Chap, we believe that tea and travel go hand in hand—each sip a reminder of the places we’ve explored, the people we’ve met, and the stories we’ve uncovered. Our journey through tea has taken us across borders, immersing us in the rich tapestry of global tea traditions.
Nestled in the verdant hills of Kerala, Munnar and Wayanad welcomed us with sprawling tea gardens, each leaf holding centuries of history. We explored the tea museums, where the legacy of tea cultivation came alive through artifacts and age-old brewing techniques. The cooperative-run estates, a testament to community-driven tea production, painted a heartwarming picture of shared prosperity.
A visit to Kolukkumalai, the world’s highest tea garden, was nothing short of magical. Shrouded in mist, the lush green expanse felt like a portal to serenity. It was here, amidst the rolling hills and cool breeze, that we truly experienced calm for the first time—an embodiment of tea’s soothing embrace.
Our travels led us to Ubud, Bali, where we discovered the artistry behind tea at Art Teas Bali. Among the many brews, the Red Tea Sinensis stood out—a deep, complex infusion that mirrored the island’s vibrant culture. We ended the evening at the Ubud Water Palace, mesmerized by a traditional performance, reflecting on how tea and art seamlessly intertwined.
Perhaps the most unexpected revelation was the discovery that tea could be made from red rice. This unique innovation challenged our understanding of tea, proving that creativity has no limits in the world of brewing.
Though renowned for its coffee culture, Vietnam holds a profound tea heritage. In Hanoi, we observed how tea remains an integral part of daily life. Local teashops, tucked away in bustling alleyways, served as morning gathering spots where old friends reunited, sipping tea and exchanging stories. It was here that we first tasted chrysanthemum tea—delicate, floral, and soothing. We also tried kumquat tea, jasmine, and other Vietnamese brews, each revealing a different shade of the country’s tea culture.
Our tea adventures continued into 2024 with a visit to Singapore, where we delved into the city’s thriving tea scene. We explored three distinct tea rooms, each offering a unique interpretation of tea appreciation. Passionate tea connoisseurs guided us through the intricacies of flavor, aroma, and history, making every sip an educational journey.
Wandering through Chinatown after an enlightening tea session, we reflected on our explorations—Vietnam, Hungary, London, Edinburgh, Thailand, Indonesia, Munnar, Wayanad, and beyond. It was in this moment that inspiration struck: why not share this passion with others? We envisioned a community where tea lovers could gather, explore, and experience tea in their own way, bound by a common love for this timeless beverage.
Travel has shown us that tea is universal—a bridge between cultures, a medium of connection. Each journey has deepened our appreciation for tea, and through The Leaf Chap, we aspire to bring these experiences to you.
